Il Cane Domestico (Canis familiaris) e l’uomo condividono una lunga storia di coesistenza che si è intensificata fino a farlo diventare il migliore amico dell’uomo e un vero e proprio membro della famiglia.
Tutte ebbe inizio circa 15000 anni fa, quando l’uomo sviluppò l’agricoltura nella Mezza Luna Fertile dando vita a una nuova nicchia alimentare e il lupo grigio, diretto antenato del nostro cane domestico, si avvicinò ai campi attratto dalla produzione di scarti vegetali e animali. Da quel momento il lupo si abituò al contatto umano e con l’addomesticamento e gli incroci evolse a cane da compagnia (Bosch et al, 2015).
In questo lungo processo evolutivo si sono verificati profondi cambiamenti che hanno coinvolto non soltanto la sfera sociale, ma anche il profilo metabolico. Nello specifico, recenti studi hanno dimostrato che durante la fase di addomesticamento i mutamenti metabolici hanno interessato principalmente tre geni implicati nella digestione dell’amido e nell’assorbimento di glucosio (Axelsson et al, 2013).
